Seat width

Measure the distance between the buttocks or thighs when sitting down, and add 5cm, that is, after sitting down, there is a 2.5cm gap on each side.  The seat is too narrow, more difficult to get on and off the wheelchair, hip and thigh tissue compression;  The seat is too wide, it is not easy to sit firmly, it is not convenient to operate the wheelchair, both upper limbs are easy to fatigue, and it is difficult to get in and out of the door.  

The length of the seat

Measure the horizontal distance between the posterior hip and calf gastrocnemius while sitting and reduce the measurement by 6.5cm.  The seat is too short, the weight mainly falls on the ischium, and the local pressure is too much;  Too long seat will compress the popliteal part, affect local blood circulation, and easily stimulate the skin. For patients with extremely short thigh or hip knee flexion contracture, it is better to use a short seat.  

Seat height

Measure the distance from heel (or heel) to popliteal when sitting, add another 4cm, and place the board at least 5cm from the floor when the foot pedal is placed.  The seats are too high for wheelchairs;  Too low seat, too much weight on the sitting bones.  

The seat cushion

For comfort and to prevent pressure sores, a cushion should be placed on the seat, which can be foam rubber (5~10cm thick) or gel cushion.  To prevent the seat from sagging, a piece of 0.6cm thick plywood can be placed under the seat cushion.

Backrest height

The back of a chair is taller, more stable, the back of a chair is lower, upper body and upper limb range of activity is bigger.  Alleged low back of a chair, measure the distance that seat face comes armpit namely (one arm or two arms are stretched horizontally forward), subtract 10cm of this result.  High back: Measure the actual height of the seat surface to the shoulders or back pillow.
